No trace of missing swimmer on Kauai

Advertiser Staff

The Kaua'i Fire Department ended its search today for a missing 42-year-old man from Bellingham, Wash., who was swept out to sea yesterday while swimming at Larson's Beach at Moloa'a on the Garden Island's northeast shore.

Roy Overstreet was swimming yesterday with his 42-year-old wife, Cara Jaye, at 5:45 p.m. when the couple was swept out. Jaye made it back to shore on her own and was treated for minor injuries at Wilcox Hospital, according to Kaua'i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert.

Michael Ancharski, 56, of Kapahi, who attempted to assist the couple but ran into trouble, was rescued by firefighters from the Hanalei station using a zodiac.

Rescue specialists from the Lihu'e station and a fire helicopter searched for Overstreet last night.

The search effort resumed today but was called off at 4:15 p.m., according to Daubert. Firefighters do not plan to continue searching tomorrow unless there's a sighting.

The Coast Guard was planning to do an aerial search tonight at 7:45.
