Japan consul in Honolulu being reassigned

Advertiser Staff

Shigeo Iwatani, consul general of Japan in Honolulu, is leaving Hawai'i in July for a new assignment, it was announced today.

Iwatani has served in Honolulu since November 2005. Senior Consul Makoto Hinei has been named acting consul general until a successor is appointed.

"We will be taking with us many fond memories of Hawai'i — year-long summery skies and swaying palms, but, most importantly, of its friendly people and their aloha spirit, the very essence that defines this extraordinary island state," Iwatani said in a written statement.
