Nature photographer Dewitt Jones of Ho'olehua, Moloka'i, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th Annual Summit and Trade Show of the North American Nature Photography Association, held recently in Palm Springs, Calif.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Emergency Services facility at Kuakini Health System was recently dedicated. The state-of-the-art, 16-bed facility will serve more than 13,000 patients each year.

Elizabeth Stone has been named executive director of The Baby Hui, a nonprofit organization, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Stone is a former state deputy attorney general and an executive manager for Discovery Toys.

Planned Parenthood of Hawai'i recently honored artist Pegge Hopper with the Betty Takahashi Service Award. The award recognizes her service to the women of Hawai'i and her support of reproductive health and freedom. The award is presented annually to an individual or organization that has provided longstanding service or made a notable contribution to the community.

Recipients of the Hawai'i Psychological Association's annual awards are:

  • Lifetime Achievement awards — Drs. Garret Yanagi and Thomas Glass.

    Yanagi has pioneered psychology in Hawai'i for five decades, primarily as a psychologist within the state Department of Health.

    Glass was honored for his roles as practitioner, teacher and public servant.

  • Daniel K. Inouye Award — Mike Fisch, president and publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser, for consistent, ongoing support for the field of psychology and mental health.

  • Distinguished Service Award — Dr. Donald Kopf, HPA's legislative committee chair and Healthy Workplace committee chairman.

  • Media Award — Katie Young, for her MidWeek column, "The Young View," which has helped ease the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment.

  • Legislator of the Year — state Rep. Brian Schatz, for his support of mental health and contributions to psychology.

  • Significant Professional Contribution Award — Kelly Vitousek, for promoting understanding of anorexia nervosa and its treatment.

  • Provision of Psychological Services to Rural Communities Award — Dr. Fahy Bailey, longtime Kaua'i practitioner and influential voice for psychology.

  • Outstanding Teacher of Psychology Award — Dr. Jeff Brooks-Harris, director of training and practicum coordinator, University of Hawai'i-Manoa, Student Development Center.

  • Outstanding Student in Psychology Award — Nicole Masukawa, graduate student in psychology.

    The HEAR ME Project, a nonprofit program created by Select Media, has selected Chuck Obina as a first-round judge for its writing competition.

    Select Media is a health education company that specializes in producing and disseminating research-based materials for targeted audiences.

    The HEAR ME Project is a story-writing competition for people ages 14 to 22 who are living with HIV.

    Richard "Rich" Keene has accepted the position of Queen's Health Systems executive vice president and chief financial officer. He will serve as chief financial officer for all of the Queen's entities, a structural change intended to streamline financial management throughout the Queen's system. He has most recently been vice chairman and chief financial officer of Bank of Hawaii.

    Lu Faborito of Wai'anae has been elected president of the Hawaii Women's Rodeo Association. Also elected were: John Texeira, vice president; and Sandy Van, treasurer, both of Wai'anae; and Lisa Marie Padilla, secretary. Board members at large include: Debbie Eguires and Jessica Keawe Reuter, both of Hale'iwa; and Stacie Nakashima of Kane'ohe.

    George Garties, Associated Press bureau chief for Colorado and Utah, has been named Illinois chief of bureau.

    Garties, 50, is a University of Hawai'i graduate and former Honolulu Advertiser staff member. Garties joined AP in Los Angeles in 1985. He transferred to the New York national editing desk in 1989, became the AP's Phoenix news editor in 1991, returned to Los Angeles as assistant bureau chief in 1995, and was named to the Denver position in 2003.

    St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii has named the following as recipients of the 2006 Mother Marianne Awards: Patrick Kelly, a crisis nurse in the critical care unit of St. Francis Medical Center; Karen Norwood, central supply services and operating room manager at both St. Francis Medical Center-West and St. Francis Medical Center; Felicia Marquez-Wong, bereavement coordinator for St. Francis Hospice; Sharon Sato, finance administrative coordinator at St. Francis Medical Center-West; and Dr. Jorge Camara, an ophthalmologist with the St. Francis medical staff.

    Veteran Honolulu Rose Society consulting rosarian Herman Davey has been named recipient of the American Rose Society's Master Rosarian award for 2007. Recipients of this award are among an elite group recognized for their knowledge of rose culture and willingness to share it with other rosarians and the general public.

    Satu Limaye has been named director of the East-West Center's Washington office. Limaye succeeds Dr. Muthiah Alagappa, who is assuming a new role as distinguished senior fellow attached to the East-West Center president's office.

    He earned his doctorate in international relations at Oxford University. He comes to his new position from the Institute for Defense Analysis in Alexandria, Va.
