The U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration has awarded $993,000 to the Arc of Hilo to pay for construction of a new Employment Training Services Center.

The facility will provide educational and business opportunities to disabled residents, and will create 229 new jobs and generate more than $865,000 in private investment, according to an announcement by U.S. Sens. Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawai'i.

"This grant will help the Arc of Hilo be better able to provide essential job and life-skills training for their clients," Akaka said in a statement released today.

Inouye called the The Arc of Hilo "a valuable resource for the Big Island. This grant will provide valuable tools for the Training Center to complete its mission of helping our disabled residents learn skills and gain employment."
