Search suspended for swimmer off Kauai's north shore

Advertiser Staff

U.S. Coast Guard officials have suspended their search off Kaua'i's north shore for a 42-year-old Washington man who witnesses said was swept out to sea Sunday while swimming near Kilauea Point.

A Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules search plane crew and a HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew have suspended their search late Monday night pending the development of new information. The Coast Guard search efforts covered an area roughly the size of Moloka'i, completing four separate flights adding up to roughly 26 hours of flight time.

The Kaua'i Fire Department suspended its search yesterday afternoon.

Roy Overstreet from Bellingham, Wash., was swimming at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday with his wife Cara Jaye, 42, when they were reportedly swept out to sea, according to Kaua'i Fire Department officials.

Michael Ancharski, 56, of Kapahi, reportedly swam out and tried to assist the couple, but also ran into difficulty.

Jaye made it back to shore on her own, while her husband was reportedly swept further out. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters from the Hanalei fire station brought Ancharski safely to shore. Ancharski did not require hospitalization.
