Wally Aina named Damien athletic director

Wally Aina Jr., who coached Damien Memorial School's varsity football team between 1980 and 1993, has been named the school's new athletic director, according to high school principal Michael Weaver.

Aina succeeds Pohai Lee, who resigned after one year in the position to be on the football coaching staff of the University of Montana-Western. Lee's father, Tommy, is the head coach there.

Lee, who has already left for Montana, endorsed the choice.

"He's the right man because of his familiarity with the school, the parents and the kids," said Lee. "He's been a coach and he knows what it takes to be successful. He's tough but fair."

Aina is a 1970 Damien graduate.

He has served as Damien's dean of students since 1987.

Aina's sons, Punahou and Kuhio, both played football for Damien and they are both assistant coaches with the varsity team.
