Charlene "Cha" Thompson will join the board of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority on Sunday, the agency announced.

Douglas Kahikina Chang will continue to serve as board chair and Kelvin Bloom will serve as its vice chair, according to Rex Johnson, HTA president and chief executive officer.

"Having had the opportunity to work with both Doug and Kelvin, I am confident that their experience and leadership will continue to strategically guide HTA as we strive to manage Hawai'i's tourism industry," Johnson said.

Chang has served on the HTA board since July 2004. This is his second consecutive term as board chair.

As general manager of the Hotel Hana Maui, Chang has extensive experience in Hawai'i's hotel and visitor industry including serving as past president of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, and as a board member of the Maui Visitors Bureau. Currently, Chang is an active member in the Maui community and serves on the Hana Business Council, Maui Hotel Association and Hana Canoe Club.

Appointed to the HTA board in July 2006, Bloom succeeds Leon Yoshida as vice chair. Bloom has more than 30 years in the Hawai'i hospitality industry and is currently, president of ResortQuest Hawaii.

He previously served as the founding president of Castle Resorts & Hotels, chief operating officer of The Castle Group and vice president of Village Resorts Hawai'i Region. An active member in the community, Bloom also serves on many boards including the Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association, Waikiki Improvement Association and Aloha United Way.

Johnson thanked the volunteer board members, especially Yoshida and the outgoing Sharon Weiner.

"Over the years, HTA has been fortunate to have an outstanding group of volunteer board members. I would particularly like to recognize and say mahalo to Leon Yoshida and Sharon Weiner who have both provided outstanding service to HTA and our entire community," he said.

"Sharon is leaving the HTA 'ohana after serving on the board since 2002. Her knowledge, expertise and dedication will be greatly missed, " Johnson said.

Thompson, owner and executive vice president of Tihati Productions, is Weiner's replacement. Thompson has extensive experience in Hawai'i's visitor industry and is an active community volunteer. She previously served as the chair of the Honolulu Police Commission, president of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association and vice president of the Institute of Human Services.
