More than a quarter of a million dollars worth of cool, quirky and coveted surf items are locked in for next month's 4th biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilveredition, at the Blaisdell Center July 20 and 21.

Of course up for bidding will be surfboards, such as a collection of 1920s redwood surfboards that is expected to fetch more than $10,000. But the items go beyond boards to things such as the jaws of a 15-foot great white shark, a 1969 painting of Duke Kahanamoku by Mary McRae Dukes, a 1960s fully operational "Surf Champ" pinball machine, and a collection of unpublished photographs by veteran Australian surf photographer Jack Eden of the 1963 Makaha International surf contest.

A portion of all sales will go to the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Scholarship Fund.

A total of 70 surfboards spanning 100 years will go under the hammer. The cream of the crop is expected to be the 11-foot Buzzy Trent Model Surfboards Hawaii gun shaped by Dick Brewer. Icon boards of pro surfers Larry Bertlemann, Gerry Lopez, and former world champions Shaun Tomson, Margo Oberg and Mark Richards are also expected to draw high bids.

A few spots are still being held open for select items from the "Antiques Roadshow"-style appraisals that will take place between noon and 4 p.m. on July 20. Members of the public are invited to bring in their personal surf-collector items for a free, professional appraisal.

Those outside of Hawai'i will still be able to bid via the live online auction on eBay. There will also be a silent auction featuring 100 smaller collectibles that include trophies, surfwear, posters, decals and photos.

This week's "Peek of the Week" can be previewed at www.hawaiiansurfauction.com, along with complete information about bidding and other auction details.
