Maui man allegedly strikes sister's boyfriend with bat

Maui News

KAHULUI, Maui — A 37-year-old Wailuku man was arrested for allegedly using an aluminum baseball bat to hit his sister's boyfriend and shatter windows after an argument outside a Kahului residence Sunday night, The Maui News reported.

Thurston G. Charley was being held Monday at the Wailuku Police Station with bail set at $7,400. He was charged with first-degree burglary, second- and third-degree assault, third-degree criminal property damage and abuse of a family member.

Police were called to the residence where Charley's sister lives in the 300 block of Ani Street at 7:48 p.m., said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said a police investigation revealed that Charley arrived at the home upset after hearing that his sister had been physically abused by her boyfriend. Charley argued with his sister and physically abused her, injuring the right side of her face, Jakubczak said.

He said Charley punched the boyfriend's father in the back of the head when he tried to separate Charley and his sister's boyfriend by trying to push the boyfriend into the residence.

The father reported seeing Charley grab a baseball bat and hit the boyfriend once on the head, Jakubczak said.

He said Charley then used the bat to shatter windows of the residence and two windows of a vehicle.

While his sister refused medical treatment, her 30-year-old boyfriend suffered injuries to his left ear and temple area, Jakubczak said.

He said the man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated before being released shortly before midnight.
