College coaches to lead Hilo baseball clinic

College coaches will provide instruction at the Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic, scheduled for July 20 to 22 at Simmons Field and nearby fields in Kailua-Kona.

The three-day clinic is free of charge and open to boys and girls ages 7 to 17.

College head coaches at the camp include Mark Marques of Stanford, Sam Piraro of San Jose State, Ed Sprague of Pacific, Ritchie Price of Kansas, Lindsey Meggs of Indiana State and Hawai'i-Hilo's Joey Estrella. Also at the camp will be assistant coaches Tom Kunis of Stanford, Chad Konishi of UH-Manoa, Tom Myers of UC Santa Barbara, and former UCLA head coach Gary Adams and assistants Glenn Mickins and Jason Green, and former Major League pitcher Tim Leary.

On the first two days of the clinic, there will be sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the 7 to 11 age group and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the 12 to 17 age group. On July 22, there will be one clinic for all participants from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a seminar on college preparation.

Participants are asked to bring their own baseball equipment, including a glove, batting helmet, bat, shoes, protective supports and water bottles.

Registration forms are available at county Parks & Recreation offices at Kailua-Kona Aquatics Center, Waimea Community Center, Waikoloa Park and Aunty Sally's Luau Hale in Hilo. Forms are also available in Kona at Swing Zone, Wally's Watch Service and Standard Bakery and in Hilo at Sportsline.
