DUI arrests up 13 percent on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Twenty motorists were arrested for drunk driving on the Big Island from June 12 to June 18, raising this year's DUI total to 608, an increase of 13 percent over last year's 539 total over the same time span.

Seven of the drivers arrested last week were involved in a traffic crash. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.

Major accidents on the Big Island, though, are down 17 percent from last year. DUI roadblocks and patrols have helped bring that number down to 975, compared to 1,175 last year at this time.
