Brennan on Maxwell watch list

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan, who led the nation in seven statistical categories last season, has been named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award.

The award has been presented to the most outstanding collegiate football player since 1937. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn was the recipient of the 70th Maxwell Award last year.

Brennan, a senior from Irvine, Calif., is one of 17 quarterbacks on the watch list. He finished sixth in the voting for the 2006 Heisman Trophy after leading the nation in total offense (422.5 yards per game), touchdown passes (58), passing efficiency (186.0), points responsible for (27.7 per game), completion percentage (72.6 percent), total passing yards (5,549 yards) and passing yards per game (396.4).

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists will be selected Nov. 26. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6.

SURFING

IRONS, PATACCHIA WIN

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. were the standouts of the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Search contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in clean 6-foot waves at Arica, Chile.

Irons had the best total score of the day in his victory over Brazil's Victor Ribas. Irons received scores of 9.17 and 9.10 for a total of 18.27.

Making it more impressive, Irons did not surf for the final 15 minutes of the 30-minute heat because of a broken surfboard.

"I got smashed on my first wave, got a good barrel on my second, a pretty good one on my third, and broke my board on my fourth," he said.

Patacchia scored the only perfect 10 of the day for a long barrel ride in his victory over France's Jeremy Flores.

"I saw Jeremy get a few 9s earlier in the event, so I knew I had to get out there and have all cylinders firing," Patacchia said. "I took off on a deep one and it had two huge layers that I had to drive through. I saw the window and I knew I was coming out."

Irons and Patacchia were the only Hawai'i surfers to advance to the fourth round.

Three others from Hawai'i — Bruce Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Kekoa Bacalso — were eliminated yesterday.
