Felon held in Honolulu on federal firearms charges

Advertiser Staff

A man charged last week with driving a stolen motorycycle is also being prosecuted on federal charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

James Burkhart, 31,also known as James Alo, is in federal custody on suspicion of possessing a .45-caliber Glock Model 21 with a magazine containing 11 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities said the gun was in a backpack Burkhart was carrying but that he claims it was not his.

A police officer stopped Burkhart at 2:14 a.m. June 21 for allegedly driving a Suzuki motorcycle in the wrong direction on Kinau Street. During the stop, police discovered the motorcycle was stolen and had a license number registered to a Yamaha motorcycle.

Burkhart is also charged federally with possession of a round of 9 mm ammunition allegedly found in his pocket during booking.

Burkhart has six felony convictions according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Center records. In September 2006, he was convicted on Maui of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and sentenced to one year confinement and five years probation.

He is now charged by the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney's Office with the theft of the motorcycle, with bail at $50,000. He also is charged in a federal complaint with the firearm offenses.
