MLB: Rain washes out record for 40-over pitchers

Rain wiped out the chances of a record seven pitchers over the age of 40 starting games today in Major League Baseball.

Today's scheduled start by 42-year-old Kenny Rogers of the Detroit Tigers against the Texas Rangers was rained out at Comerica Park.

It leaves six 40-and-over scheduled starters, including Roger Clemens of the New York Yankees going for his 350th victory and Tom Glavine of the New York Mets aiming for his 297th. That would tie the record set June 22, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, baseball's statistician.

Clemens, 44, is scheduled to pitch against the Baltimore Orioles on the road, while Glavine, 41, is set to go against the St. Louis Cardinals at Shea Stadium in New York.

The Houston Astros' Woody Williams (40) started today at Milwaukee and the San Diego Padres' Greg Maddux (41) pitched at San Francisco.

Also today, the Philadelphia Phillies' Jamie Moyer (44) goes against Cincinnati and the Atlanta Braves' John Smoltz (40) pitches against Washington.

Today's scheduled starters have won a combined 14 Cy Young Awards as their league's best pitcher, with Clemens' taking a record seven.

Seven pitchers in major-league history have won 350 games and 22 have reached 300. Every retired pitcher with 300 wins is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Clemens' 349 wins are most among active pitchers. Maddux is next at 339 and Glavine is third. Glavine will tie Bobby Mathews for 23rd place on the all-time list if he wins tonight.

Maddux is accompanied on the Padres' staff by 44-year-old David Wells
