Foodland events highlight Hawaii-grown products

In support of the state Department of Health's Fruits and Veggies Good Choice! Campaign, Foodland supermarkets will present five "Island Grown Market at Foodland" events on every island.

The first event will be held this Saturday, June 30 at Foodland Ewa Beach.

The "open market" events will showcase Hawai'i's farmers and their Island produce, and help educate customers about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.

The Island Grown Market at Foodland events will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following days and locations:

o Saturday, June 30, Foodland Ewa Beach (O'ahu)

o Saturday, July 14, Foodland Pukalani (Maui)

o Saturday, July 28, Foodland Waimea (Big Island)

o Saturday, August 11, Foodland Waipouli, (Kaua'i)

o Saturday, August 25, Foodland Dillingham (O'ahu)

Residents will have the opportunity to speak with Hawai'i's local farmers, sample their fresh island grown fruits and vegetables, and purchase the items at special prices.

The following farmers and products will be featured on Saturday, June 30:

o Kahuku Brand mangoes and eggplant

o Sugarland watermelon, bell peppers, cabbage and cucumbers

o Twin Bridge Farms asparagus

o Hamakua Springs Country Farms specialty tomatoes, salad greens and bananas

o Sumida Farm watercress

o Hawai'i Enterprise Co. Okinawan sweet potatoes

o Dole Hawaii pineapple

o Aloun Farms corn and Asian vegetables

In addition, cooking demonstrations using fruits and vegetables will be presented by Foodland's corporate chef, Keoni Chang, and his team of chefs.

Dishes include:

o Caramelized Minted Pineapple

o Asparagus with Lemon and Parmesan

o Mashed Okinawan Sweet Potatoes

o Tomato Eggplant Salad

o Watermelon with Aged Balsamic

o Watercress Salad with low-fat blue cheese dressing
