DUI arrests up 13 percent on Big Island

Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving June 19 to June 25, raising the 2007 DUI arrest total on the island to 636, an increase of 13 percent over last year's 563 at the same time.Eleven of the drivers arrested last week were involved in traffic crashes and four were under the age of 21.
There have been 1,008 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,217 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.
So far this year, there have been 17 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 17 during the same period last year.
