Meet author, join marrow registry today at Borders

Advertiser Staff

A public book signing takes place at 6 p.m. today with author and illustrator Melissa DeSica, to mark the release of her first published book, "Gecko and Mosquito."

The event also includes a bone marrow registry drive conducted by the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry. DeSica was diagnosed with leukemia the same week the first preview copies of her book arrived last month.

Meet DeSica and register as a potential donor at Borders Books & Music, second floor, Ward Centre.

The registry uses the "buccal swab" technique, which involves a swab of cheek cells inside the mouth. Donors must be 18 to 60 years old and in good health. For more information on bone marrow donation, call the registry at 547-6154 or visit www.marrow.org.

"Gecko and Mosquito" is a 32-page hardcover children's book, written and illustrated by DeSica. Published by Watermark Publishing, it is available in bookstores and other retail outlets, or by ordering direct from the publisher at www.bookshawaii.net or toll-free 1 (866) 900-2665 (900-BOOK).

For further information, contact Watermark Publishing, 1088 Bishop St., Suite 310, Honolulu, HI 96813, 808-587-7766.
