Fighter pilot's body recovered in ocean by Coast Guard

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — The body of a pilot whose F-15 fighter jet crashed during a training exercise over the Pacific Ocean has been recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard, officials said today.

The name of the pilot has not been released until family members are notified.

The exercise matched four F-15 jets against four F/A-18 jets from a Marine Corps Reserve unit stationed near Fort Worth, Texas, military officials said.

Only seven returned Tuesday.

"It's hard, it's really hard right now," Air Guard spokeswoman Maj. Misti Mazzia said Wednesday.

The exercise allows pilots to train against fellow pilots who use a different strategy and pit the different jets against each other to sharpen their flying skills, according to the Oregon Air National Guard.
