Sakamaki Lecture Series continues at UH

Advertiser Staff

A free University of Hawai'i at Manoa Centennial Celebration event, the Sakamaki Lecture Series continues in July with a July 11 talk by Stuart Scott on "The Climate Crisis," and a July 18 screening of the film "The First Battle," followed by a Q&A session with the film's producer, Tom Coffman.

Both programs take place at 7 p.m. in the Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012 on the Manoa campus. Seating is limited; first come, first served.

Stuart Scott's presentation summarizes the science of global warming, establishes the reality of the human ecological footprint as a major causal factor in this phenomenon, and delves into solutions, on an individual and collective basis, to this challenge to humanity.

Scott, a graduate of Columbia University and the University of Florida, is an educator, environmentalist, and longtime Honolulu resident. He currently teaches college mathematics, statistics and critical thinking, and markets solar energy solutions here in the islands. He has joined The Climate Project as a presenter of Al Gore`s "Climate Crisis" slide presentation, which is the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth." Scott recently launched his own ClimateCorps (www.climatecorps.org) to provide resources for restoring balance to the earth.

"The First Battle," a 57-minute film, chronicles the formation and actions of the Council for Inter-racial Unity that was organized in Honolulu in 1939 in support of Hawaii's large Japanese-ancestry community. Where 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were relocated from the West Coast and interned, a behind-the-scenes battle for justice and equality-reaching as far as the White House-set Hawaii on a different course. "The First Battle" portrays people working together under extreme stress against great odds. It will change how viewers see Hawaii. Tom Coffman is an independent researcher, writer, and documentary producer. His documentaries include "Nation Within, The Annexation of Hawaii by the United States" (1998); "May Earth Live" (2000); "Arirang: The Korean American Journey" (2002); and most recently, "The First Battle." He has written books, including: "With Obligation to All" with former Governor George R. Aryoshi; "Nation Within, the Story of America's Annexation of Hawaii," and "The Island Edge of America"; as well as contributed to such magazines as New Republic, Motive, and Honolulu.
