Prosecutors charged a 31-year-old man who allegedly stole a handbag from a woman in Mapunapuna and later assaulted an officer in trying to avoid arrest.

Clifford Kau is accused of second-degree robbery and first-degree assault on a police officer. He was charged at 4:15 p.m. yesterday and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Kau allegedly confronted a woman, 38, at 7 a.m. yesterday and grabbed her handbag. The shoulder strap of the bag broke while the two struggled for control. As the woman reached down for the bag, Kau allegedly shoved her back, causing her to fall, and fled with the bag.

Responding police officers located Kau at a nearby service station. He allegedly assaulted an officer and fled. Police discovered Kau hiding in the bed of a pickup truck in a parking lot a short time later.
