Maui highway reopens after midday closure

Advertiser Staff

Honoapi'ilani Highway near Olowalu on Maui has reopened after a midday closure of about a half-hour.

Honoapi'ilani Highway was shut down from 11:41 a.m. to 12:13 p.m. after smoke from a major brushfire made parts of the highway dangerous to travel on, said Mahina Martin, a spokeswoman for Maui County.

A tree also fell, blocking one of the lanes.

"The winds have really picked up and are probably flowing more than 40 mph at this point," Martin said at 12:35 p.m.

"All of the fire breaks are holding at this point," she said.

So far, the fire, which broke out about 10:30 a.m. yesterday, has blackened more than 1,400 acres and destroyed a home in Olowalu.
