Hilo runway closure may increase noise levels

Advertiser Staff

Hilo-area residents may notice an increase in aircraft noise Saturday, when the state Department of Transportation closes a runway at Hilo International Airport for maintenance work.

Runway 8/26 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for marker installations and maintenance.

Because of the runway closure, flights will be rerouted to flight patterns that are not the norm, leading to an increase in air traffic noise over the Hilo area, state officials said.
