Maui keeping eye on strong winds later today

Advertiser Staff

Expect moderate trade winds through tomorrow, weakening by this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. There will be chances of windward and mauka showers.

Firefighters are also keeping a close watch on weather conditions affecting the ongoing Maui brushfire. Forecaster Derek Wroe said yesterday's gusty wind conditions on the leeward side of the West Maui mountains will continue today, with the strongest winds in the afternoon.

"That's the kind of situation that can really help to spread a fire," Wroe said.

Here's what to look for in the extended forecast:

  • Today — Isolated showers during the afternoon. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79 degrees. East wind between 14 mph and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of rain: 20 percent.

  • Tonight — Isolated showers before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72 degrees. East winds at about 14 mph. Chance of rain: 20 percent.

  • Friday — Mostly sunny, with a high near 80 degrees.

  • Friday night — Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72 degrees. East winds at about 10 mph. Chance of rain: 20 percent.
