Haleakala park rangers find body below lookout

The Maui News

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK — Rangers discovered the body of a man below a lookout at Haleakala National Park on Wednesday morning, a park ranger said.

The man, a Mainland resident believed to be in his late 40s, apparently died several days ago, park ranger Sharon Ringsven told The Maui News. The death didn't appear to be suspicious, although officials were working to recover the body Wednesday afternoon.

The body was found before 9 a.m. a couple of hundred feet below the Leleiwi overlook at the 8,800-foot level of the park, Ringsven said.

Rangers began searching after seeing a vehicle left in the parking lot that appeared to be abandoned, she said. After investigating further, rangers learned the man connected to the vehicle might be missing.

The man may have been living on Maui for a while, Ringsven said.
