Honoapi'ilani Highway on Maui remained open this morning and phone coverage was fully restored to the West Maui mountain areas, where a brushfire has consumed nearly 2,000 acres since Wednesday.

"The fire is certainly not near the road anymore," county spokeswoman Mahina Martin said.

A briefing with the Maui County Fire Department at the site will be held later this morning.

Maui police opened the highway at 9:45 last night.

Hundreds in the Launiupoko subdivision in West Maui returned to their homes after 11 last night, about six hours after they were evacuated.

Firefighters have remained on the scene this morning to respond to hot spots.

Two shelters for individuals stranded by the earlier highway closures were shut down this morning, according to Director Maria Lutz of the American Red Cross Maui.

The Lahaina Civic Center closed at about 7:30 a.m., and the Maui High School, 8 a.m.
