MARTIAL ARTS: JULY 6-8

Fist forms, animal (tiger, eagle, monkey, etc.) forms. What does it all mean? Sixteen monks from China's legendary Shaolin Temple will show you when they put on a martial-arts and acrobatic-fighting display at the Hawai'i Theatre. Troupes of Shaolin kung-fu masters have performed in more than 30 countries.

Three top female recording acts from back in the day will come together for The Ladies of the '80s concert at Pipeline Cafe. CONCERT: JULY 10

As the sun sets on Waikiki, the aquarium lawn lights up with the sounds of Brother Noland and Tony Conjugacion, one of three remaining performances at the aquarium's Ke Kani O Ke Kai summer concert series. The night's restaurant partner will be Yama's Fish Market, and the aquarium galleries and exhibits remain open throughout the evening. Subsequent concerts will be by Cyril Pahinui and Dennis Kamakahi July 24 and Natalie Ai Kamau'u and Auntie Genoa Keawe Aug. 7.

"You Somebody," the comic story of Pua "Ma" Lusa, who is determined to get her not-so-talented family mentioned in Wayne Harada's Show Biz column, returns to the Diamond Head Theatre stage where it was launched five years ago. It's written by Lee Cataluna, who also is an Advertiser columnist, with music and lyrics by Keola Beamer; cast members include Loretta Ables Sayre as "Ma," Wil Kahale as Daddy Lusa, Pomai Lopez as Lisa Lusa, Angela Morales as Eloise Baga, and Cathy Foy Mahi, Cheryl Toma Sanders, Traci Toguchi and Denby Dung as Miss(es) Hawai'i. The 2006 Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductees — Mahi Beamer, Nina Keali'iwahamana, The Brothers Cazimero and Emma Veary — will perform and be celebrated in a concert titled "Lei of Stars." Kumu hula Pohai Souza and Halau Hula Ka Mamo Liko Lehua and Halau Na Kamalei (kumu hula Robert Cazimero) also will join in. Harry B. Soria Jr. is master of ceremonies and Randy Hongo is accompanist.

FESTIVAL: JULY 21

The annual Prince Lot Hula Festival, themed "Olelo mai na kupuna mai — the legacy lives on," turns 30 this year. Besides much noncompetitive hula, there are kapa, ipu, lauhala and lei-making workshops and demonstrations and food booths. The Queen Emma Hawaiian Civic Club will teach ancient Hawaiian games. Bring beach chairs or mats. Commercial photography is not allowed.

It's all about the arts at the Hale'iwa Arts Festival's 10th annual Summer ArtFest, featuring juried visual artists, musicians, singers, dancers, cultural trolley tours, storytellers, student art, demonstrations, children's art activities and more. Several North Shore businesses and galleries will be offering special events and promotions, too.

Talented youths, virtuosos and international guest performers will showcase that four-stringed instrument at the Starbucks 37th annual Ukulele Festival. Headliners include Herb Ohta, Jake Shimabukuro, Holunape, Manoa DNA, Ho'okani Pila, Simon Clothier (London), Guam Ukulele Club (Guam), Sunset Strummers Ukulele Band (California) and Yugi Igarashi from Japan. Get your soul and groove back at the 2007 Soul Jam, which features Jimmy Walker hosting hit-makers The Chi Lites, Main Ingredient featuring Cuba Gooding Sr., Three Degrees, Harold Melvin's Bluenotes, the Delphonics and Stylistics. Albuquerque-born, Portland, Ore.-based indie rock group The Shins makes its Hawai'i debut at Pipeline Cafe. The band's most recent album, "Wincing the Night Away," reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts in January. The Shins also made a splash in the acclaimed soundtrack to the 2004 film "Garden State" with the tunes "Caring is Creepy" and "New Slang."
