Last year's first FACE of Nu'uanu fashion show introduced Honolulu to new designers who ranged in age from 10 to 87. The 2007 event promises to provide a venue for even more up-and-coming artists. Are you one of them?

The Honolulu Culture and Arts District is inviting designers to enter the annual Nu'uanu FACE Showdown/Showoff by entering garments in day wear, Hawaiian wear, evening wear and resort wear categories.

All garments must be completed by Sept. 15. The show and street festival will take place Oct. 13. The entry fee is $25 per item. Information and applications: Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Nu'uanu Fashion Showcase, c/o Louis Pohl Gallery, 1111 Nu'uanu Ave., Honolulu, HI 96817. Or e-mail sandy pohl@hawaiiantel.net and request an application.

CHANEL FALL PREVIEW

Even if you can't afford a Chanel suit, gown or handbag, it's still fun to ogle the fabulous clothes and accessories by creative genius Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel Waikiki is bringing in a trunk show of sample sizes from the fall/winter collections, on view from noon to 5 p.m today at 2116 Kalakaua Ave.

FIRST FASHION FRIDAY

Inspired by the enthusiasm for First Fridays gallery walks in Chinatown, Aloha Tower Marketplace is plugging into the scene with its own First Fashion Fridays. The mall is seeing an emergence of fashion-oriented boutiques. Positioning itself as a fashion venue, Aloha Tower will present a series of fashion and lifestyle talks this summer.

The schedule:

  • July 6, noon: Pack Light While Traveling in Style, with U magazine's Paula Rath.

  • Aug. 3, noon: Style Her Famous, How to Dress Like a Celebrity with Blaine Ashley.

  • Sept. 7, 6 p.m.: Fashion Feng Shui (Dressing With Intention) with Alice Inoue.

  • Oct. 5, 6 p.m.: Fashion finale with SMART Magazine.

Talks will be held in the center's atrium. In addition, many Aloha Tower Marketplace merchants will have special events, sales, trunk shows, gifts with purchase and more. Information: 566-2337, or e-mail info@alohatower.com to sign up for a monthly newsletter.

    VILLA ROMA CLOSES

After 40 years in the fashion biz, Audrey Fu will close her Villa Roma store at Ward Warehouse on July 31.

The store, which was originally in Ala Moana Center, owed its staying power to Fu's brilliance at buying special-occasion clothing for boomers — an often-ignored age group. She has counted Melveen Leed, Brook Lee, Carolyn Sapp, Kelly Hu and Desiree Cruz as customers. From the '60s to '80s, Fu used fashion shows to showcase fresh new designer lines.

Customers are invited to come in to say "aloha 'oe," so that Fu can thank them personally.

    JOIN THE INCUBATOR

The Hawai'i Fashion Incubator, a resource for the fashion community, has put out a call to artists and designers. The grass-roots organization is seeking a logo, Web designer, fashion designers and fashion-related comics and drawings for use in the newsletter. Interested? Send digital artwork to: issamay78@hotmail.com.

The Incubator has held preliminary meetings at venues around Honolulu and is in the early planning stages, determining what the fashion community's needs are and how they might be met through a nonprofit organization.

Top priorities identified in a survey of fashion-related people include a fashion district in Honolulu; a Hawai'i-based Fashion Week; affordable workspace; events to showcase local talent; and trade shows for local and international retailers.

To learn more about the Hawai'i Fashion Incubator, or to get involved, e-mail issamay78@hotmail.com or toby@polkadotreehouse.com.
