Scholarship founded in honor of Capt. David Lyman

Vallejo, CA — The Captain David Lyman Endowment Fund Committee and The California Maritime Academy have announced the creation of The Captain David Lyman Scholarship Endowment, opening new opportunities for Hawaiian students attending Cal Maritime. The initial $100,000 funding for the endowment includes contributions from members of the Hawaiian maritime industry and of the Hawai'i Harbor Pilots Association, members of the Lyman family and the many many friends Capt. Lyman made during his life.Those contributions have been matched by The California Maritime Academy Foundation to create the initial endowment. Captain Lyman, a 1965 Academy graduate and founder of the Hawai'i Harbor Pilots Association, died January, 2006, in a fall from a boarding ladder during a pilot assignment.
The announcement of the endowment was made Friday afternoon at a reception for Cal Maritime alumni, cadets, families, friends and supporters, including Lyman family members and friends aboard the school's training ship Golden Bear in Honolulu. The ship is in port for "changeover" – the transfer of cadets, faculty and staff between the first and the second of the school's annual two-month training cruises – this year to ports of call in Asia.
Academy President William B. Eisenhardt, in announcing the new scholarship, said he was honored that the Endowment Fund Committee had not only raised such a significant amount of money in recognition of Capt. Lyman, but had then agreed to work with Cal Maritime in establishing a permanent memorial to their friend and colleague.
"Capt. Lyman was known and loved throughout the Islands," said Capt. Ed Enos, himself a pilot and a 1987 graduate of the Maritime Academy. "Dave had countless friends – not surprising given the many acts of kindness and generosity he displayed during his rich full life. As a member of the Endowment Fund Committee, I know all of us who loved Dave want to give something back, as he did so often. This new endowment will help keep his name alive, year in and year out, by helping promising Hawaiian students attend the Maritime Academy and learn new skills so vital to Hawaii's maritime trade and transportation industry."
"The California Maritime Academy Foundation, in honor of one of its outstanding graduates, is matching the Lyman Endowment Fund Committee's initial contribution," explained Thomas Dunworth, the Academy's Vice President for Advancement. "The starting endowment of $100,000 will provide new scholarship opportunities for Hawaiian students attending Cal Maritime. We hope to work with the Lyman Fund Endowment Committee in the future to further expand the size of the endowment, and the ability to assist Hawaiian students."
"As the only U.S. maritime academy on the West Coast and a truly regional institution of specialized higher education, Cal Maritime draws students from throughout the Western U.S. and the Pacific Rim," Dunworth added. "Hawaii is second only to the State of Washington in the number of non-California students it sends to the California Maritime Academy each year. That is understandable given Hawaii's ties to the sea and the importance of maritime skills to the state's economy. Because Cal Maritime's programs are unique, Hawaiian students benefit from an inter-state agreement with California which enables them to attend the Academy, a part of the California State University System, at a tuition that is half the normal out-of-state rate. The Lyman scholarship will further reduce costs and increase opportunities for promising Hawaiian students interested in maritime-related careers."
