Alaska crash: Soft soil led to Makakilo couple's deaths

Advertiser Staff

Alaska State Troopers have concluded that a motor home crash near Seward, Alaska, on Tuesday that killed a couple from Makakilo was caused by the driver's loss of control after the large vehicle ran off the road's right shoulder, causing the right front tire to dig into soft soil.

After the vehicle left the highway it drifted farther into a ditch and down an eight-foot embankment, investigators said. The motor home hit several trees before coming to rest when the center of the front bumper slammed into a large tree.

Jeffrey and Dawn Klausing, both 41, were sitting on a couch in the back of the motor home and were killed on impact. All five other victims in the crash were released from medical treatment facilities as of Thursday.
