Go early.

Go often.

Wear very light clothing.

Bring a sturdy bag and lots of patience.

With these tips in mind, you are so ready to tackle the 60th annual Friends of the Library of Hawai'i Book Sale, which launches today at McKinley High School's sweltering cafeteria (that's why you should wear light clothing).

The sale offers more than 100,000 books on just about every topic imaginable — there are cookbooks, kids' books, fine-arts tomes, reference material, romance novels, mysteries and thrillers, travel books and science fiction. Music, too, and magazines.

The overloaded tables in the cafeteria are restocked every few hours, so there's always new stuff — well, new old stuff — to check out. That's why you should go often.

And there are special promotions for bargain hunters:

  • 10 percent off everything on Thursday;

  • 25 percent off on Friday;

  • Half off on July 7;

  • 50 cents each, or two paperbacks for 50 cents, on July 8.

    By the way, if you forget to bring your own book bag, boxes should be plentiful.
