HAWAII BRIEFS
Body found of man swept away

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A body that washed ashore on Larsen's Beach Wednesday was that of a man who disappeared while swimming there with his wife Sunday, Kaua'i authorities said yesterday after an autopsy.

Roy Overstreet, 42, of Bellingham, Wash., was visiting the east Kaua'i beach Sunday when he and his wife were swept into the water. She was helped to shore by another beachgoer, but Overstreet disappeared.

A two-day ground and air search by the Coast Guard and Kaua'i Fire Department proved futile. The body was found washed up on the shore early Wednesday.

KIHEI MAN WAS MOTORCYCLE VICTIM

WAILUKU, Maui — Police have identified a motorcyclist whose body was found days after he crashed into thick brush off North Kihei Road as David Fleury, 40, of Kihei.

An autopsy Thursday determined the man suffered multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident, said Lt. Robert Hill of the MPD Traffic Section.

Fleury's body and his S&S Big Dog custom motorcycle were found Tuesday about 10 to 15 feet on the makai side of the two-lane road near the Maui Electric Co. generating plant after a passing bicyclist reported an odor, Hill said. He is believed to have died sometime within a week before the discovery.

HAWAI'I INMATE IN ARIZONA STABBED

A Hawai'i inmate at the Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy, Ariz. was stabbed in an altercation Tuesday, according to a corrections spokeswoman.

Three Hawai'i inmates were involved in the fight, which is still under investigation, said Louise Kim McCoy, spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Safety.

McCoy said the inmates were separated, and the injured inmate was treated at a local hospital and released.

McCoy would not say what sort of weapon was involved, how the inmates came into contact with each other, or where in the prison the assault occurred.

As of this week, Hawai'i is holding 601 convicts in Red Rock, which is owned and operated by the Corrections Corporation of America.

The state pays about $50 million a year to hold about 2,100 male and female prisoners from Hawai'i in CCA prisons on the Mainland because there is no room for them in Hawai'i prisons.

PASSENGER DIES OF CRASH INJURIES

WAILUKU, Maui — A 36-year-old Kihei woman died Thursday from injuries suffered in a June 19 motorcycle wreck on Pi'ilani Highway.

Rochelle Kekona died at 10:15 a.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center, said Lt. Robert Hill of the MPD Traffic Section. She was a passenger on the back of a Wailea-bound 2007 Harley-Davidson that struck the back of a 1999 GMC pickup truck south of the Keonekai Road intersection, he said.

The driver of the truck, an 18-year-old man from Folsom, Calif., had found himself in a right-turn-only lane and tried to change lanes in front of the motorcycle, Hill said. The motorcycle operator, a 46-year-old Kihei man, swerved to avoid the truck and hit the back of the vehicle. Kekona was not wearing a helmet, Hill said.

The motorcyclist suffered cuts and bruises, while the truck driver was uninjured.

Kekona's death is Maui County's 14th traffic fatality of the year, compared with nine a year ago.

PARENTS WANT ASSAULT RECORDS

HILO, Hawai'i — The parents of a 19-year-old woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted at a Kea'au private school by an underage boy in 1991 are demanding that police surrender records in the case.

The woman reported the sexual assault on the grounds of the former Henry Opukahaia School on March 25, 1991, when the woman was 4. The woman and her family believe the youth involved was prosecuted in connection with the case in Family Court years ago, but have been unable to obtain complete police reports in the case.

The Circuit Court filings said the woman and her family "severely suffered" because of the assault. The youth was a student at the school, and admitted to the assault, according to redacted police records that accompanied the court filing.
