Big Island man killed in car accident identified

A 63-year-old man Kealakekua man died yesterday from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Kauakini Highway on the Big Island, police said.

The victim was identified as Jerry Matias Sr.

Police responded to the call at 9:25 a.m. Kona patrol officers said Matias was driving a 1985 Chevrolet pickup truck and traveling north on the highway when he crossed the center line and collided with a 2001 Ford pickup truck traveling south.

Matias was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:02 a.m.

The driver of the Ford truck, a 30-year-old Kailua, Kona man, was treated for minor injuries.

It is unknown if speed or alcohol were involved. Police said Matias was not wearing a seatbelt.

A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and an autopsy has been scheduled.
