Defensive lineman Young will return to 49ers

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Defensive lineman Bryant Young agreed Thursday to return for a 14th season with the San Francisco 49ers.

Details of Young's new contract weren't immediately available.

Young is the 49ers' longest-tenured player and the sole remaining roster link to their last Super Bowl victory following his rookie season in 1994. The four-time Pro Bowl selection spent most of his career as a defensive tackle before moving to end in the last two years under coach Mike Nolan.

Young, whose 83 career sacks are third in team history, contemplated retirement after the season, but Nolan led the lobbying efforts to retain his leadership and steady play.

Young, 35, is expected to play a reduced role next season. He started all 16 games last year, making 5› sacks.
