Help sought to open shelter in Manoa

Advertiser Staff

The Salvation Army is asking for donations or in-kind support to help open a transitional shelter in Manoa as early as September.

The shelter would house 12 homeless women and their children in two large, brick bungalows. The Salvation Army has already raised $1.2 million for the shelter, and needs about $600,000 more to complete the project.

"This project has been a long-time dream of the Salvation Army," said Linda Rich, executive director of family treatment services. "We have grown increasingly aware of the difficulty women with children face."

The shelter has gotten support from U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who lives in Manoa, along with other lawmakers who represent the community.

Seven companies have also pitched in, donating flooring, carpeting, tile and appliance installation. For more information, call Rich at 732-2802.
