2 O'ahu students win Gates Cambridge Scholarships

Bloomberg News Service

Two students from O'ahu were among the winners of prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarships to study at the University of Cambridge in England.

The local winners were Kelly Karns of Honolulu, who is attending Yale University, and Janine Rogers of La'ie, now at the University of Pennsylvania.

Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the program granted 48 awards to U.S. students this year, representing 29 U.S. colleges and universities.

The Gates program recognizes students from outside the United Kingdom who demonstrate academic merit and leadership potential. The scholarships support students who pursue a second bachelor's degree at Cambridge, take one-year post-graduate courses, or do research leading to a doctorate degree.

The scholarships are worth about $40,000 a year, including university costs, living expenses and travel, said Ed Strauss, a New York-based spokesman for Cambridge.

About 150 scholarships are presented annually, with one- third of the recipients typically coming from the U.S. Over six years, 621 students from 78 countries have studied at Cambridge.
