The man accused of murdering off-duty deputy sheriff Daniel Browne-Sanchez Feb. 10 was sentenced to up to 30 years in prison this morning for previous drug offenses.

John K. Lorenzo tried to withdraw an earlier no-contest plea in the drug case, but Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto denied that motion and sentenced Lorenzo to consecutive 20- and 10-year prison terms.

Lorenzo was free on bail and attending a drug treatment program when he allegedly entered the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge at 3 a.m. Feb. 10 wearing a mask and body armor and carrying a stolen semiautomatic handgun that was equipped with a silencer.

During an attempted robbery, Lorenzo fired several rounds at employees of the bar then fatally shot Browne-Sanchez multiple times, according to testimony this morning from Honolulu Police Department homicide detective Roland Takasato.

Lorenzo is being held without bail on charges including murder, attempted murder, kidnaping and robbery.

Carlisle called it "one of the most vicious, heinous crimes committed in the state of Hawaii in the last decade."
