State worker pharmacy benefits not affected

Advertiser Staff

State workers and retirees should have no trouble getting their prescriptions filled at Longs Drug Stores or Times Supermarkets when a switch to a new pharmacy benefits manager is made in July, the Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund was told yesterday.

National Medical Health Card Systems Inc., which provides the service, told fund trustees the company has existing agreements with the two retailers. It also is in the process of amending its contract with Longs to add more details, National Medical Health Card Systems said yesterday.

Questions on whether the 180,000 workers and retirees could get their prescriptions filled at Longs arose earlier this week and were the subject of a hearing Tuesday during which state Sen. Clayton Hee, D-23rd (Kane'ohe, Kahuku) questioned whether National Medical Health should have been chosen for the contract.

Yesterday, the company appeared before fund trustees and said it appeared that a misunderstanding led to the concerns. It said it did about $100,000 of benefit claims business with Longs in Hawai'i last year through two of its subsidiary firms and that there should be no problems when the new contract starts later this year.
