TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"The Black Donnellys," 9 p.m., NBC. If you missed the debut Monday, catch this quick rerun. It's one of the year's best pilots with a rare blend of warmth toward family and violence toward everyone else. Paul Haggis directed the pilot and wrote it with Bobby Moresco. The result has the same sort of rich layers that they brought to the Oscar-winning "Crash." Tommy Donnelly (Jonathan Tucker) has loved Jenny Reilly (Olivia Wilde) since childhood. But she's married now, and trying to get his brothers out of trouble has sapped his time. Now they've created a big blunder, putting the young Donnellys against the mob that controls the neighborhood. The result is tough and taut, yet richly human.

"Matilda" (1996), 8 p.m., ABC Family. Danny DeVito may be the perfect person to capture the dark wit of a Roald Dahl story. This one has a sweet girl (Mara Wilson) surrounded by evil people, then finding special powers. DeVito directed and played a villain alongside his wife, Rhea Perlman.

OF NOTE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. Here's the second weekly results show. Two men and two women will be dropped, leaving us with eight of each; a week from now, "Idol" will have its 12 finalists.

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. The "sweeps" ratings period has ended, as viewers will notice. Every one-hour drama tonight is a rerun. This one introduces a beauty (played by Salma Hayek, who is also one of the show's producers) who instantly has Daniel's attention.

"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. This rerun has some charming moments when Earl meets a bearded lady (Judy Greer) and her circus friends. The bigger laughs come when Joy, who lacks any political correctness, meets her hearing-impaired lawyer (Marlee Matlin).

"The Office," 7:30 p.m., NBC. After hearing a report that their office is closing, staffers daydream about what else they might be doing in this rerun.

"Scrubs," 8 p.m., NBC. Here's a new episode — albeit one stuffed with old clips. Trying to help a patient who has a memory problem, staffers reminisce about the past six years.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Here's a rerun of this show's only weak episode this season. The guys (except Mark Sloan) go on a camping trip, with so-so results.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. A woman has been found crucified in a Catholic church. Police get opposite views of the priest.

"Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader," 8 p.m., Fox. After a couple of half-hour samples, the game show moves into its regular night and its one-hour length.

"30 Rock," 8:30 p.m., NBC. Jack decides that the only way to sell his family's so-so wine is to have it be endorsed by hip-hop stars Ridikolus (LL Cool J) and Ghostface Killah. That brings everyone to the Source awards, where there are complications for Liz and for Kenneth the Page.

"Shark," 9 p.m., CBS. After shooting her lover, a married socialite (Jami Gertz) claims it was self-defense. Meanwhile, Stark is angry at his daughter after she spends the night with her boyfriend.
