HANA
Panel hosts free miconia lecture

Advertiser Staff

The Maui Invasive Species Committee will host a free public lecture on miconia at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Hana Public Library.

Committee staff will explain the threat posed by the introduced plant and control efforts. Miconia can crowd out other plants in native forests, causing erosion and damaging the watershed. The Maui Invasive Species Committee has a full-time crew searching for miconia over thousands of acres in East Maui.

The plant's seeds are as tiny as a grain of sand and can be transported into new areas by birds, hunters, hikers and vehicles.
