UH volleyball men beat alumni in exhibition

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team defeated an alumni squad, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, in an exhibition match Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The alumni featured past greats Costas Theocharidis (2000-03), Jason Ring (1996-97), Curt Vaughan (1994-97), Eyal Zimet (2000-03), Sivan Leoni (1995-98), Torry Tukuafu (2000-01), Maulia La Barre (2001, '04-6), Troy Hotz (1995-96), Kai Kahale (1995-97), Kahinu Lee (1996-97), Ryan Woodward (2002-04) and Hans Stolfus (1997).

In the first preliminary match of the night, a group of alumni mainly comprised of former players from the 1950-80s participated in a race to 20 points. Manny Relator (1959) directed the White squad to a 20-11 win over the Green.

In the second preliminary match, teams made up of alumni from the 1980-90s played two sets to 25 points. The White team won the first, 25-19, and the Green won the second, 25-19. Troy Hotz (1995-96) led the White with a match-high of 10 kills. Green's Pono Ma'a (1983-86) and Alex Berganio (1992) each posted seven kills.

The Warriors resume regular-season play next week, hosting No. 1 Pepperdine March 8 (7 p.m.) and 10 (3 p.m.).
