Big Island police ask for witnesses to robbery

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police are looking for witnesses to an incident in a parking lot following a reported robbery Wednesday at a retail store at Makalapua Center in Kailua, Kona.

Police responded at 4:30 p.m. They said a 24-year-old man had struggled with store security personnel outside the store in an attempt to get away with stolen items.

It was reported that the suspect was restrained by security personnel and shortly thereafter required an ambulance, possibly due to a pre-existing medical condition. Medics were summoned to the scene. They took the suspect to Kona Community Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The Kona Criminal Investigations Section asks anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has additional information to call the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at (808) 329-8181 in Kona or (808) 961-8300 in Hilo. All CrimeStoppers information is kept confidential.
