Courtney Gaddis scored 19 points and Kalani survived three potential game-winning shots by Punahou in the final seconds as the Falcons beat the defending Hawaii High School Athletic Association champions, 39-38, Friday night at Punahou's Hemmeter Field House.

The Falcons trailed by a dozen points midway through the third quarter but powered their way back behind solid guard play and an imposing front line.

Tressa Torres scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, and teammate Becca Lau chipped in eight points to lead the Buffanblu.

Kalani won the Division II title last season. Kalani head coach Darold Imanaka said last night's victory should give his team some momentum as the program moves up to Division I this year.

"It's huge," Imanaka said. "It's like going from JV to varsity, but these kids are beautiful. When they got down tonight, they didn't give up. This is really big for us."
