Volunteers welcome on archaeology trip to Marquesas

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i professor of anthropology Barry Rolett will lead a five-week archaeological trip to the Marquesas this summer. Anyone who is interested in Pacific history is welcome to join as a volunteer staffer.

The project is based in Vaitahu village on Tahuata (next door to Hiva Oa where Gauguin lived and painted). Volunteers will work on an actual excavation site of a sand dune in the area where Captain Cook first anchored. The site covers the period of time just before European contact in the 1770s through 1850.

"It's loaded with artifacts and preservation is perfect," says Rolett, who has worked in the Marquesas for years.

On Tahuata there is no airport, not even a hotel. Trip participants will stay in a rented house a short walk from the beach.

Cost: $4,700. Dates: June 30 to July 17.

To register, contact Barry Rolett at rolett@hawaii.edu.
