Hawai'i sweeps Chicago State in doubleheader

Advertiser Staff

Tyler Davis pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and Hawai'i squeezed past Chicago State, 3-2, to complete a doubleheader sweep yesterday at Les Murakami Stadium and take a 4-0 lead in the five-game series.

The Rainbows improved to 13-6, and the Cougars dropped to 0-10.

Rainbows' coach Mike Trapasso was ejected after arguing a top of the fifth-inning call at first base. Jonathon Wilson was called out at first after a grounder, but the home plate umpire overruled the call, saying the first baseman was pulled off the bag, to keep the inning alive.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the second — their first lead of the series — on a two-run triple by Chris Goya. It was the Mid-Pacific Institute graduate's first hit of the season after starting 0 for 17.

Hawai'i came back with one in the bottom of the second. Brandon Haislet led off with a single to center, stole second, took third when Kris Sanchez flied out to center, and scored on a wild pitch to pull UH to 2-1.

The Rainbows tied it in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Frash led off with a single to left, and Haislet was hit by a pitch. Sanchez reached first when he grounded to first for a force at second to put runners at the corners. Frash scored on Kevin Macdonald's sacrifice foul fly to right to make it 2-2.

Hawai'i took the lead in the fifth. Ryan Asato and Jorge Frano started with back-to-back walks and advanced on Derek DuPree's sacrifice. Nate Young's grounder back to the pitcher froze the runners, but a wild pitch to Frash scored Asato to give UH a 3-2 lead. Frash grounded out to first to end the inning.

In the first game, Jon Hee batted 5 for 7 with four RBIs, and Kris Sanchez hit his fifth home run of the season, to help Hawai'i beat Chicago State, 20-3.

The Rainbows scored 20 for the second time in the series, winning Thursday night, 20-1. The Cougars scored their most runs in the series in the game.

Joshua Schneider (2-1) allowed a run and seven hits with walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Jeff Soskin allowed a run in one inning, and redshirt sophomore Harrison Kuroda made his collegiate debut, also allowing a run in one inning of relief.

Mike Wieda (0-3) was tagged for nine runs, 12 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Freshman Vinnie Catricala made his first start at third base, batting 2 for 6 with two RBIs; redshirt freshman catcher Kevin Fujii made his first collegiate career start at catcher, batting 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs.

The 25 hits by UH was the most of the season. Kevin Macdonald was 4 for 5 with five runs scored, while Frash, Eli Christensen and Asato each had three hits. Asato got all of his hits coming off the bench. He has five consecutive hits in the series, all off the bench, including four successive doubles.

Alex Hall was 3 for 4 for the Cougars.
