The First Hawaiian Bank State Canoe Paddling Championships moved to Hilo Bay for the first time and yesterday it led to a record-setting day and an Interscholastic League of Honolulu sweep.

Kamehameha won the girls and mixed (three boys, three girls) divisions, while Mid-Pacific won the boys. The winning teams all set state meet records.

The previous five state meets were held at Ke'ehi Lagoon on O'ahu.

Mid-Pacific boys co-coach Mark Hines said the teams raced into the wind to start yesterday, but had the wind at their backs once they turned around half way through the half-mile course.

"There was an on-shore wind throughout the whole day but the sun was up," Kamehameha mixed team coach Kalama Heine said. "It was a beautiful day. These are the fastest times I've seen since the state (meet ) started."

The Mid-Pacific boys won their first state title in 3 minutes, 37 seconds. ILH rivals Maryknoll (3:37.78) and Kamehameha (3:40.11) followed. The previous record was 3:43.31 by Punahou in 2002 — the inaugural state meet.

Hines said his team's times "got 6 seconds faster" in each race (preliminaries, semifinals and final).

The members of the crew were Sammy Agsen, Jon-Michael Grindle, Ryan Harrison, David Markle, Travis Niederhauser, Arthur Simpson, Reyn Halford and Kody Rieh.

"They worked hard to peak at the right time," Hines said. "When you work with young men you hope they can set goals and achieve them."

Kaua'i's Kula School, which has 55 students at the high school level, finished a surprising fourth among the boys.

"People were coming up to us all day and telling us how well you're doing," Kula athletic director David Rojeck said. "They couldn't believe we finished fourth in the state. There are no divisions."

The Kamehameha girls won the first four state crowns before Punahou ended their streak last year.

Warriors girls coach Rose Lum said she opened things up after a third-place finish at this year's ILH championships.

She said she looked at paddlers from "JV I on up," and added "We formed a new team. It paid off."

The Warriors finished in 4:12.9. Mid-Pacific, the ILH champion, was second in 4:13.34 and league runner-up Punahou third in 4:15.9. The previous state meet record was 4:13.57 by Kamehameha in 2002.

Members of the crew were Brianna Abrigo, Kikolani Martinez, Ku'uiponohea Elderts, Victoria Hanohano-Hong, Malia Maresa, Jenna Quinn, Nahoku Keala and Ashley Irvine.

"They were pumped up for the race," Lum said. "Everyone worked hard. We had a luau last night; (Kamehameha-Hawai'i) families on the Big Island did it for them."

Kamehameha won the ILH's first mixed division state title in 3:50.49. Two Big Island Interscholastic Federation schools were second and third — Kealakehe in 3:54.3 and Konawaena in 3:54.6.

Members of the crew were Abrigo, Martinez, Elderts, Quinn, Keala, Justyn Ah Chong, Travis Voeller, Blane Yoshimura, Lohiao Paoa and Nathan Loyola.

Two O'ahu Interscholastic Association teams and three Maui Interscholastic League schools won the previous five mixed titles. The ILH has won every boys and girls state title.

According to Heine, the ILH previously had a policy of keeping mixed crews together the entire season.

Things changed this year.

"This year for states we put out best paddlers in," Heine said. "We doubled up on races. Everyone else did it in the past. If they're going to do it we're going to do it."
