Man charged with theft of car and silky terrier

Advertiser Staff

A 40-year-old Mo'ili'ili man with four prior convictions for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle was charged today with stealing a car and a dog.

Since the dog is a pure-bred silky terrier valued at over $300, Baophuc Q. Nguyen has been charged with auto theft and felony theft. His bail is $50,000.

A witness allegedly saw Nguyen drive off in a vehicle known to be stolen from an area near the Hawai'i Kennel Club's dog show at Blaisdell Center on Saturday and followed him. Police were called and Nguyen was arrested at 2700 Wai'alae Ave. at 5:35 p.m.

Gerri Cadiz, chairwoman of the Hawai'i Kennel Club, said no silky terriers were in the show.

Nguyen has 14 prior convictions that include felony theft, forgery and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2000 for breaking into a vehicle.
