Carvalho chosen to lead Kaua'i Parks Department

Bernard Carvalho has been appointed by Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste to head Kaua'i County's newly created Department of Parks and Recreation.

The appointment became effective March 1.

Carvalho has worked for the county for more than 21 years, 17 of them in the Recreation Division of the Public Works department.

Most recently, Carvalho was director of Kaua'i County's Offices of Community Assistance, where he was charged with overseeing formation of an affordable-housing task force, expansion of island public-bus service, implementation of an after-school program and many other activities.

Formation of the Department of Parks and Recreation resulted from a County Charter amendment approved by Kaua'i voters during the November election.
