ART ADDS COLOR TO KEAUHOU RESORT
The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa has installed a new art collection with the aid of Honolulu's Design Studio. The art is meant to give visitors a strong sense of place, with such works as Aurthur Johnsen's "White Orchids," and "Misty Red Road" offering a glimpse of Island flora and fauna. Herb Kane's "Hokule'a" is also to be seen during an art stroll of the property, on 22 oceanfront acres in Keauhou near Kailua on the Big Island. www.starwoodhotels.com/hawaii.
RITZ-CARLTON KAPALUA UPDATING
Maui's Ritz-Carlton Kapalua will close July 2 through Dec. 15 for a $95 million renovation that will alter the look of the place substantially, abandoning the Ritz-Carlton's standard English country- house-style decor for a more Hawaiian look. "We want it to look as though you had stepped into the mind of a Hawaiian," said cultural specialist Clifford Nae'ole, who will preside over a new cultural education center when the hotel reopens.
All the rooms will be redone, and the public spaces will be redecorated with new artwork. The spa is being expanded and the restaurants will be freshened up. "It will be a brand-new hotel by the time we're done," Nae'ole said. Philpotts & Associates of Honolulu is handling design work.
