Hawai'i men No. 94 in college basketball's RPI

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team is ranked 94th among 336 NCAA Division I schools in college basketball's Rating Percentage Index (RPI) released today.

RPI is used to help select and seed at-large teams in the NCAA Tournament, which chose 65 teams to participate in its March Madness.

No. 1 in the RPI is UCLA, followed by Ohio State, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Defending champion Florida is No. 9 and Western Athletic Conference champion Nevada is No. 19.

Hawai'i enters the WAC Tournament Thursday against Utah State in the quarterfinals. The winner of the WAC Tournament gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Hawai'i finished the regular season at 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the WAC. The Rainbows are seeded No. 5 in the tournament.

Utah State is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and has a rating of No. 65 in the RPI.

The basic RPI is derived from three component factors: Division I winning percentage (25 percent), schedule strength (50); and opponent's schedule strength (25). Games against non-Division I opponents are not used in calculating the RPI.
