Pedestrian killed near Poka'i Bay

An 80-year-old female pedestrian was killed this afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle on Farrington Highway near Poka'i Bay in Wai'anae.

The accident was reported just before 4 p.m. at 85-803 Farrington Highway, near Island Mini Mart.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as Tapu T. Neddermeyer of Wai'anae.

Neddermeyer was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, and died at 5:22 p.m.

It was the 10th pedestrian fatality on O'ahu this year. Last week a 63-year-old man was killed as he was crossing Farrington Highway near the Makaha Surfside Apartments.

Police said Neddermeyer was in a crosswalk, walking in the mauka direction from Island Mini Mart to Wai'anae Speed Wash, a laundromat.

A townbound car in the curb-side lane stopped to let her cross, police said, but a red Honda in the left lane did not stop and hit Neddermeyer, police said.

A 28-year-old woman from Wai'anae was driving the red Honda, police said.

Last week's Makaha accident happened under similar circumstances, when one car stopped for the pedestrian but a second vehicle did not, hitting the man.
